Preparing For Kindergarten

WHAT LEARNING EXPERIENCES WILL PREPARE MY CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN?

  1. Knowledge of basic colors and shapes.
  2. Ability to count in sequence 1 – 10.
  3. Following simple to complex directions, one single directive up to three.
  4. Discrimination between concepts same and different.
  5. Ability to match pictures, symbols.
  6. Auditory recognition of rhyming words.
  7. Understanding opposites.
  8. Beginning sounds, consonants.  Determine whether your child can hear the initial sound in a given word, reproduce it, and hear like sounds in other words.
  9. Some recognition of capital and lower case letters.
  10. Sequencing of things, events, symbols.
  11. Position words, such as on, over, under.
  12. Ability to listen to a story and answer simple factual questions.
  13. Write first name, beginning with a capital and continuing with lower case letters.
  14. Recognition of number symbols 0 – 10.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP PREPARE MY CHILD FOR THE FALL?

  1. READ, READ, READ to your child daily! 
  2. Ask comprehension questions about the stories read.
  3. Ask your child to repeat the sequence of main events.
  4. Ask “what if” questions to stimulate creative thinking.
  5. Give your child easy to follow directions and follow through on completion.
  6. Play color and number games (i.e., “I see something red,” “Bring me two spoons and napkins.”).
  7. Practice holding a pencil and scissors correctly.
  8. Play description of object games; categorize the objects in many ways.  Match number symbols to corresponding number of objects.  Do the same with shapes.

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS I CAN DO TO MAKE MY CHILD’S KINDERGARTEN ENTRY EASY AND PLEASANT?

  1. Print your child’s name on all removable clothing articles and lunch containers.
  2. Give your child nutritious breakfast, snacks and lunches.  Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep each night.
  3. Dress your child comfortably and don’t become alarmed when he/she comes home dirty.
  4. Have your child arrive on time.  Pick up your child on time.
  5. Bid your child a quick, warm goodbye.  If you hesitate, so will your child.
  6. Discourage bringing toys from home to school.
  7. Keep communications open between yourself and your child’s teacher.
  8. Keep your child home when he/she is ill.  Call the attendance hotline to report absences.
