Meet the Principal, Tina Howard

Thirty-three years of service to Carlsbad kids and going strong.  Principal Howard started her administrative service to the Buena Vista community in 2008 after many years as a teacher and leader in the education community.

Principal Howard was raised in West Covina and attended Edgewood High School where she was elected Vice President of the ASB, was on the Prom Court, and was selected “Most Spirited” by her classmates.  She attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and earned a B.A. in sociology followed by a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.  She also holds a current Reading Specialist Credential and earned a Master of Arts in Reading and Language Arts Education from SDSU where she was recognized as a “Graduate of Distinction.” In 2001, Ms Howard completed the requirements for a Professional Administrative Services Credential and has been a site and county education administrator since.

Principal Howard began her career with Carlsbad Unified in September 1985, teaching first at Kelly School, then Pine Elementary and Aviara Oaks Elementary School when it opened in 1999.  She was selected as Site Teacher of the Year at both Pine School and Aviara Oaks Elementary School and represented her peers as a mentor teacher for most of her 16 years as a classroom teacher. During 2003-04, Principal Howard was on-loan from CUSD to the County Office of Education where she held the position of Coordinator for the Professional Development for the Online Production Department.  In this role, she trained teachers and school leaders throughout the state on current reading education strategies and computer-based professional development.

In 2005, Ms Howard was named Assistant Principal at Aviara Oaks Elementary.  She then moved to Calavera Hills Middle School as Assistant Principal in 2007.

Over the years, Ms Howard has served as an education consultant and trainer in language arts, arts education, art education, and classroom management throughout San Diego County and Canada.  She also was an education ambassador for the Rotary International Group Study Exchange Program traveling to Kenya, Seychelles Islands and Uganda.

Ms Howard lives in Carlsbad with her daughter Linnea, their two cats and guinea pig. In addition to her passion for animal rights and adoption (all of their pets from Rancho Coastal Humane Society), Howard enjoys spending time with her daughter, visiting art galleries and fairs, daily exercise, and being active in the Carlsbad community.
